This section seeks to explore Shakespeare's visual continuity within his English literary context, through relevant images about his place in that tradition from Chaucer, Marlowe, Jonson, Donne, Milton, Dryden, Pope, Wordsworth, Keats, Dickens, down to G. B. Shaw. This background highlights the derivation and impact of Shakespeare performance in British culture, and identifies some significant traits in his work which that tradition has elucidated.
