Richard III: 1984, Royal Shakespeare Company; Antony Sher as Richard.
Antony Sher's use of modern crutches (resulting from his own recent injury) gave the crippled Richard authenticity, and his long sleeves, added to these two extra "legs", made him look like a monstrous six-legged insect. For a detailed discussion of this production see Hugh M. Richmond, Shakespeare in Performance: "King Richard III ," Manchester University Press, 1990, pp. 106-24. Director, Bill Alexander; Designer, William Didley; Photographer, Donald Cooper (ahds.ac.uk/performingarts).
