"The scenes outside Arden are few, brief and relatively unimportant, so the giant Herne Oak that Richard Negri uncompromisingly plants in the centre of his sloping set looks out of place only in a room in Duke Frederick's palace. And even here the impression that this gentleman has a greenwood tree for a chimney piece is offset by clever lateral lighting suggesting a more appropriate interior.
