A copy of the Chandos portrait, probably of Shakespeare.
Shakespeare's fellow actor Richard Burbage may have painted the Chandos portrait, though George Vertue claimed it was by John Taylor of the Painter-Stainers' Company and that, before the Duke of Chandos, the portrait was owned by Shakespeare's godson, William Davenant. Its present owners, the National Portrait Gallery, believe that the Chandos portrait is likely to be of Shakespeare (see next image). The earring and loosened shirt-ties were characteristic of other Elizabethan poets, like John Donne.
