Booth's Theatre, New York, in 1869: Design for Act III of Hamlet.
Odell says the outstanding production in the 1869-70 season was Hamlet, with Booth as Hamlet, "a performance now mellowed to the point of richness which from the time forward for years stamped the impression inseparable"(567-8). Compare this perspective with that of the Castle Theatre (above). The baroque effect is one recreated by Branagh in setting his Hamlet film in Blenheim Palace.
