The Tempest: J. L. Cathcart as Caliban, Prince's Theatre, Manchester,1864.
The Director's wife Mrs. Charles Cathcart played Ariel (as she had for Phelps at Sadlers Wells seventeen years before). She recorded in "Sixty-Eight Years on the Stage" that Charles Calvert chose the play because it would cost little: "The scenery is merely landscape and seascape, all thoroughly useful forother plays, - only five or six nobles' dresses need to be costly, and no armour is required."
