Johnstone Forbes-Robertson's painting of the Church Scene (4.1) of Much Ado About Nothing at the Lyceum Theatre, London, 1882.
Irving's production has Ellen Terry as Beatrice (third from left) Forbes- Robertson as Claudio (right of center), and Irving as Benedick (second man on his right). The vast scale of this church scene (4.1) is very apparent and it distracts attention from the individual expressions of the principals, so that the nuances of the personal relationship of Beatrice and Benedick are diminished. Real concentration is required to discern their exact response to this situation in which Claudio repudiates Hero. HMR Courtesy of the Hampden-Booth Library, New York.
