Annie Russell played Major Barbara in Shaw's play of that name.
First staged in 1905 at the Royal Court Theatre in London, Annie Russell played the title role, Louis Calvert was Undershaft, and Granville Barker was Cusins. Major Barbara pits Barbara, an idealist officer of the Salvation Army, against her father Andrew Undershaft, an arms manufacturer. Barbara is a naive figure like Isabella of Measure for Measure, trying to find her way in a corrupt society - a topic Shaw also explored in Mrs. Warren's Profession. All Shaw's young women become more aware and less innocent. Picture and some data courtesy of the Yorck Project, under Creative Commons Attribution-Share- Alike License (Wikipedia).
