Dickens had a wide range of theatre experience, as spectator, actor, and producer. He left his wife for the actress Ellen Ternan. He started performing his own texts after seeing the success of readings by the celebrated actress Fanny Kemble (see prevous image). His skill in dialogue and character creation made his texts ideal for readings.
