Increasingly scholars are noting the relevance of medieval culture to Shakespeare's time, witness The Stripping of the Altars: Traditional Religion in England, 1400–1580, a work of history written by Eamon Duffy and published in 1992 by Yale University Press, New Haven. The book stresses that, despite the Reformation many English people of Shakespeare's time had retained much of Catholic culture. Indeed, Shakespeare's family may well have been Recusants, or covert Catholics.
