Tintern Abbey and the River Wye by Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923).
This picture shows the inland River Wye as described by Wordsworth at Tintern. "Lines composed a few miles above Tintern Abbey on revisiting the banks of the Wye Valley during a tour, July 13, 1798" is the terminal poem of Lyrical Ballads, outlining his general philosophies on nature. This image illustrates Shakespeare's phrase about the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII: "bare ruined choirs where late the sweet birds sang" (Sonnet 73.)
