John Donne, Poems, 1669, with an engraved portrait of Donne as a young man.
The Poems were initially published posthumously in 1633. Many were considered too erotic to be published in print during the lifetime of a prominent cleric, but did circulate widely in manuscript, like Shakespeare's sonnets. The poems were often influenced by Donne's attendance at Shakespeare plays, see: Richmond, Hugh M.,, "Donne's Master: the Young Shakespeare," Criticism XV.2 (Spring,1973), 126-44.The engraving, by William Marshall, first published in the second edition,1635, may have been based on an original miniature by Hillyard.
