Marlowe's first-hand knowledge of French political life derived from his experiences as a spy in France, and this play was the first of others dealing with the extravagant personalities of the Valois courts (see next image) including Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost, and Chapman's two Biron plays. The King of Navarre is the major figure recurring in all four plays (historically he became Henri IV, King of France).
