Henry V. 1900: Lewis Waller (1860-1915) as King Henry V.
In many ways Henry V is Shakespeare's military hero whose triumph at Agincourt matches any of Marlowe's Tamburlaine. In 1900-1, J. Comyns, managing director of the Lyceum, ran 80 performances of Henry V with Lewis Waller as Henry, William Mollison as Pistol, E. M. Robson as Fluellen, Alexander Calvert as Gower, Gordon Doone as Jamy, and Lily Hanbury as the Chorus. Sarah Brooke played Katherine of France. Walker's fine voice and vigorous acting earned him critical acclaim in a number of Shakespeare roles, such as the title character in Henry V, Brutus in Julius Caesar, and Faulkenbridge in King John.
