Andrea Sacchi (1599 - 1661): The Death of Queen Dido (early 17th century).
This painting suggests the romantic figure Dido provided for Renaissance artists both on stage and off, including Shakespeare. For in The Merchant of Venice (V.i) Lorenzo has the following lines:
     In such a night
Stood Dido with a willow in her hand
Upon the wild sea banks, and waft her love
To come again to Carthage.
