The pedant Holofernes in Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost at UCB 1977.
In his narrative Rabelais describes various schemes of education for Gargantua. When Gargantua's childhood is discussed, his father, Grangousier, notes the intelligence of his son, and decides to make him learn Latin letters as taught by a theologian, Tubal Holofernes, who makes him learn Gothic lettering and recite by heart, according to medieval methods.Grangousier then realizes that his boy is making no progress, so he decides to dismiss Tubal Holofernes and find a new teacher. Shakespeare's pedant is equally inept, perhaps a comment on Shakespeare's own schooling? Image: UCB Shakespeare Program Collection, photographer Velma Bourgeois Richmond.
