King Henry of Navarre and his first wife "la Reine Margot" 1572
These are likely models for the King and Princess in Shakespeare's Love's Labour's Lost. At the time of her stay in Nérac Margot was slimmer than shown here, but became plumper, which lends aptness and edge to Costard's identification of her among her ladies as "The Thickest and the tallest! It is so - truth is truth./ An your waist, mistress, were as slender as my wit, / One o' these maids girdles for your waist should be fit./ Are you not the chief woman? You are the thickest here." (IV.i.49-52) This miniature was taken from a Book of hours owned by Catherine de'Medici.
