This skeptical aristocrat was an important negotiator in the French Religious Wars. In retirement he wrote highly subjective essays which seem to have influenced Shakespeare in a play such as The Tempest (see last image). The essays were translated by the Humanist Florio, a friend of Shakespeare's.
