Ronsard was called "the Prince of Poets" and this picture shows him like Petrarch, crowned with laurel leaves to celebrate his status at court. Like Shakespeare dedicating Venus and Adonis to the Earl of Southampton, Ronsard was very dependent on aristocratic patrons. Both authors were servants of their monarchies.
