The poet John Gower as Chorus in Pericles.

The picture is taken from the title page of a novel by George Wilkins, The Painful Adventures of Pericles, Prince of Tyre (1608), probably based on the earlier, successful play, which he may have co-authored with Shakespeare. Shakespeare would have frequently seen Gower's tomb in what is now Southwark Cathedral, just a few yards from the Globe Theatre.
