The Winter's Tale, Act 4: A Pastoral Festival from May in Spenser's Shepheardes Calender
The rural scenes in Bohemia in The Winter's Tale (Act IV) are based on the pastoral tradition stemming from the Greek Theocritus (who was originally a Sicilian), which Shakespeare would have known via Virgil's Eclogues, but the nearest model would be Spenser's Shepheardes Calender. However, the tradition remained nominally pagan so it still fits the ambiance of The Winter's Tale with Perdita's rural fete.
