Stonehenge
Herodotus recorded that there was a great monument such as this in Britain, dedicated to Apollo, and Shakespeare has Lear always swear by Apollo. Shakespeare could hardly have avoided seeing some of the innumerable prehistoric monuments that still survived in Britain such as Stonehenge, which is often used as a backdrop to productions of the play, such as Olivier's television version.
