Twelfth Night, 1994, Royal Shakespeare Company.
Twelfth Night: Director, Ian Judge; Designer, John Gunter; Photographer, Donald Cooper (ahds.ac.uk/performingarts); Royal Shakespeare Company, May 1994.
"John Gunter's beguiling design (with fine costumes by Dierdre Clancy and superb lighting by David Hersey) places Clive Wood's Orsino in a tapestry-walled enclave with candelabra; and Olivia's palace, unambiguously on Shakespeare's own patch, with a tantalising prospect of the medieval guild chapel, timbered facades of Scholar's Lane and, in the gulling of Malvolio, the barren, wintry flowerbeds of the knot garden in New Place." Michael Coveney, Observer 29.5.94. Opening Date: 25 May 1994; Theatre: Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
This set managed dextrously to blend plausible vestiges of the Elizabethan period (as in the backdrop of old houses) with more modern manners.
