Bernhardt first appeared as Hamlet at the Théatre des Nations, Paris, 1899, and then in London and New York, with very mixed reviews - as too feminine! This French actress performed the role as late as 1925 at the Adelphi Theatre in London. Many modern actresses have attempted the role.
