Cushman's Lady Macbeth was dominant and agressive. William Winter wrote "whenever the occasion arrived for liberated power.passionate feeling, poetic significance, dramatic effect, she rose to that occasion and made it superb." Her strong manner and deep voice allowed her to plays male roles convincingly. When playing Macbeth with her in England in 1845 Forest had less success.
