"Tom Piper has provided an airy design of bleached wood: a lofty space intersected by a huge spiral staircase, beautifully lit by Heather Carson, against which huge shadows are constantly cast. Halfway through the play the figure of Angelo, descending the stairway, is engulfed by the massive shadow of the Duke, in disguise but undiminished; in the closing scene, the shadow of the kneeling Mariana looms above the figures of the courtiers...The set has the shape of a ballroom and the colour of a monastry."
