4.22 Fanny Kemble (1809-93)

Fanny Kemble was the daughter of Charles Kemble and first performed, as Juliet, in 1829, excelling later as Portia, Beatrice and other leading roles. Her marriage was complicated by her rejection of the slavery on her husband's plantation. The engraving for Johnson, Wilson & Co. is from a painting by Sir Thomas Lawrence.
