Romeo and Juliet: Ellen Terry (1847-1928) as Juliet, Mrs. Stirling as her Nurse
Juliet appears rather mature and the Nurse's costume looks positively Victorian. In a dispatch from London (dated 10 March 1882) the New York Times reported that Mrs. Stirling "had a tremendous reception last night when she appeared for the first time as the Nurse, which in her hands was full of human nature." The Times reporter also felt that "Miss Ellen Tery seemed the very embodiment of all that is passionately sweet in Juliet's nature." However, the Times also noted that there were some "critics who will say [Mr. Irving's production] has subordinated the art of the actor to that of the painter, the musician, the costumer, and the stage manager."
