This picture shows how Poel moved historical authenticity in Victorian productions beyond elaborate recreation of the historical settings of Shakespeare's scripts to recreation of the way all such plays were staged in Shakespeare's time. Note here the thrust stage with curtains at the rear not the front, the galleries, the canopy supported by two massive pillars down-stage, Elizabethan costumes, etc.HMR
