Macbeth, V.i: Mrs. Patrick Campbell (1865 -1940) as Lady Macbeth at the Lyceum Theatre.Page 438 from The Sketch, Sept. 28, 1898.
“Mr. Forbes Robertson made a distinct advance on all his previous achievements by his revival of Macbeth at the Lyceum Theatre last night. His conception of Macbeth was decided and consistent, while Mrs. Patrick Campbell’s Lady Macbeth surprised even her ardent admirers. As was only to be expected, this gifted lady’s exposition of the character was conceived on thoroughly original lines, and was in many ways entirely different from the Lady Macbeth of tradition. Though from the very first meeting with the Weird Sisters the poisonous ambition was seen stirring in Macbeth’s mind, Mr. Forbes Robertson showed emphatically that it was the subtle prompting of his wife that brought their schemes to fruition. . . . In the sleepwalking scene Mrs. Patrick Campbell approached well-nigh perfection, and the last act showed Mr. Forbes Robertson at his best.” Our London Letter, Dundee Courier, Sept. 19, 1898: 19th C.
