Hamlet, 1897: Mrs. Patrick Campbell (1865-1940) as Ophelia at the Lyceum Theatre, 1897 (with Forbes-Robertson as Hamlet).
“The new Hamlet is full of bright and natural innovation, which adds greatly to the humanity of the characters in the play. . . . The chief scenic novelty is an orchard for Ophelia’s mad scene, instead of a room in the Castle. Mrs. Patrick Campbell played Ophelia with poetic feeling, but her performance was regarded as somewhat weak.” Our London Letter, Dundee Courier, Sept. 13, 1897: 19th C.
