Richard III: Julia Arthur as Lady Anne at the Lyceum Theatre, London, 1896.
"There is in Sir Henry Irving's reading a personal magnetism which is greatly needed to convince us of the probability of the villain's easy conquest of Lady Anne. Only on the grounds of hypnotic possession can the extraordinary behaviour of that lady and Queen Elizabeth be accounted for. Here Sir Henry Irving's wonderful personality had full play, and his remarkable physiognomy, penetrating gaze, and marvelous mobility of lip and brow gave the fullest point to he cynical humour of the part. . . . . Miss Jean Arthur's acting in the fascination scene was very earnest and impressive, and though the part of Lady Anne is an uphill one she made the best of it."
