Richard III: J. P. Kemble as Richard III, London, Drury Lane Theatre, 1783.
Garrick's gestures in confronting the ghosts in the scene before Bosworth Field seem to be echoed here. However, Sir Walter Scott said that Kemble could neither look nor behave like a villain, and other critics agreed that his substantial figure did not suit the physique of Richard III. However, another felt the portrait made him look evil "with his lowering brows and dark hair." Courtesy of the Victoria & Albert Museum. Oil on canvas, painted by William Hamilton R.A. after 1788.
