Macbeth: Mrs.Yates as Lady Macbeth, London, Covent Garden Theatre. 1769.
Mary Ann Yates was noted for her refined elegance and majestic bearing. James Boaden wrote that she approached the statues of antiquity in the solemn composure of her attitudes. (Dictionary of National Biography). Note the extravagant dress (spread with "panniers"): at this time there was no attempt at historically plausible costume for actresses, who just adopted current highest fashion. Historical costume for Shakespeare on the London stage started with Charles Macklin's Macbeth of 1773, for which he entered in plaid scarf, tartan stockings and tunic; but by Act II Macbeth was wearing modern breeches while Mrs Hartley was still dressed throughout in a hoop skirt, like Mrs Yates' Lady Macbeth here.
