Rosalind was originally a boy actor playing a girl, who dresses as a boy as a disguise, but meeting her boyfriend pretends to be impersonating herself. Modern actresses necessarily lack the first level of these complications and may find it hard to sustain the remaining two levels of impersonation. However, Redgrave succeeded admirably in the role.
