Shakespeare was staged in Poland early in the 17th c. as London players visited Gdańsk (Danzig), Elbląg (Elbing) and Królewiec (Kronigsburg/Kaliningrad) by 1601.Shakespeare's art must have pleased the Gdańsk public, for around 1610 the the Gdańsk burgers invest in a permanent theatre, a replica of the Fortune Playhouse in London.
