Page 1.A. This engraving of Hogarth's painting of Garrick as Richard III shows his wakening from a nightmare on the eve of his fatal battle at Bosworth Field (5.3.176). The hand movement and posture are classic Garrick effects. This play is usually staged with appropriate historical costume, despite the memorable exception of Ian McKellen's performance of 1995, which was set in the nineteen-thirties.
