[Antony and]Cleopatra: Paramount film, 1934.
The bull cult is widespread and long-lasting! See Gallery 10.f for more Shakespeare allusions to such animal rites. This symbolic image is from the scene of Antony's seduction by Cleopatra in Cecil B. De Mille's Paramount production, "Cleopatra", in which the director's niece, Agnes de Mille, was to dance on the back of a bull. When Agnes and her uncle disagreed, Katherine Hankin and a score of other beauties kept the bull from being disappointed. The revel takes place on Cleopatra's palatial barge. In 1934 the Hays code had just taken effect, so DeMille got away with using more risqué imagery than in later productions. http://www.clevelandmemory.org/copyright/; Cleveland State University.
