Globe A4 Theatre at Taormina
[edit]
This civic theatre on a mountain above the Mediterranean, at Taormina in Sicily, illustrates the development of the rear wall of the stage in later versions of Greek theatres, particularly Roman ones. Access from beneath the stage is possible via trapdoors now missing. Note how the landscape remains a powerful factor for spectators who can see the snowy crest of the active volcano, Mount Etna, in the distance.
