"A stylised ancient Japanese setting full of ritual and ceremony lends interest to long scenes and speeches of celebration and invocation and helps make sense of the chivalric code that underpins this tragic romance." Lyn Gardner, City Limits 22.5.86
In this opening scene, three widowed queens seeking revenge interrupt the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta. like a classical Greek Tragedy. But this was a production of a Renaissance play, based on a medieval romance, though set in prehistoric Greece, and with Japanese costuming. The audience seemed understandably confused about what exactly was going on. HMR
