Troilus and Cressida, 1976, Royal Shakespeare Company,
Troilus and Cressida; Director, John Barton; Designer, Chris Dyer: Photographer, Tom Holte (ahds.ac.uk/performingarts); Royal Shakespeare Company, August 1976
"In Troy we get the first hints of a lavish effeminacy which is the keynote of Barton's interpretation. This is primarily a question of costume, but the mannerisms of Pandarus and the general demeanour of the warriors are meant to flourish qualities Shakespeare only suggests. These are, of course, vital to the play. The breakdown of established value turns not only virtuous women into whores, but strong fighters into 'womanish' weaklings." David Zane Mairowitz, Plays and Players 10.76. Opening Date: 3 August 1976, Theatre: Royal Shakespeare Theatre.
Despite the archaic costumes the moral issues involved here are modern ones. HMR
