Hamlet, 1897: Edward Gordon Craig (1872-1966) as Hamlet.
This photograph shows Craig at the Olympic Theatre in 1897, wearing Henry Irving's costume from a decade before. He was the son of Ellen Terry and Edward Godwin. Craig later developed theories about the theatre, holding that the director was "the true artist of the theatre" and actors merely marionettes. He designed elaborate sets, with new lighting other than footlights, as for the Moscow Arts Theatre Hamlet of 1911 (see next images). His theory of unified production values was published in Art of the Theatre (1911). Published Courtesy of the Yorck Project, under GNU Free Document License.
