Henry V, Night Scene (IV.i.294-311), 1900: Frank Benson (1858-1939) as Henry V.
In 1900 Frank Benson's company performed Henry V at the Lyceum Theatre in London, with Benson as Henry and his wife Constance as Katherine, Matheson Lang as Montjoy, Henry Ainley as the Duke of Gloster, Oscar Asche as Pistol, and Lily Brayton as Alice.
Benson seems type-cast in this role as a heroic general, a persona very much in vogue during the height of the British Empire. Benson's productions were not noted for their psychological insights but for athleticism. Notoriously Max Beerbohm wrote of one of his productions: "The fielding of the Benson [team in "Henry V"] was excellent, so was the batting. . . . as a branch of university cricket, the whole performance was, indeed, beyond praise."
