Hamlet at Elsinore Castle: Old Vic Players, 1937.
One of the typical modern performance venues is an appropriate historical building, ideally one closely associated with the script. Lawrence Olivier was in the 1937 Old Vic Season: in January he played Hamlet, directed by Tyrone Guthrie, with Michael Redgrave. In June he repeated the role in Hamlet, directed by Tyrone Guthrie, with Vivien Leigh as Ophelia at Kronborg Castle, Elsinore, Denmark, the nominal setting of Shakespeare's script. For pictures of the castle overall, see Gallery 10.f.14-19. WorldImages Portfolio: Theatre & Drama: 19th-20th c. under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 2.5 License.
