The baroque Castle Theatre at Krumlov matches the 18th C. Drottningholm Palace Theatre outside Stockholm.

The Castle Theatre in the Krumlov Castle illustrates the kind of perspective theatre which evolved in Europe in the 17th century and was imitated in England. It involves vast perspectives readily modified by sliding scenery from the wings (though not of course illuminated by electricity as here!). Complete scene changes can be accomplished in seconds. Inigo Jones did a great deal of work in this field of stage design, learning mostly from Italian precedents for such theatres as this. He is credited with introducing movable scenery and the proscenium arch to English theatre. Jones designed costumes, sets, and stage effects for a number of masques by Ben Jonson at the court of King Charles I. These models greatly influenced English theatre design and staging from the Restoration onwards. The masques in Shakespeare's later plays reflect such influences in performances at the Blackfriars Theatre.
