The Merchant of Venice: Edmund Kean (1789-1833) as Shylock.
Kean carried forward the more sympathetic portayal of Shylock. Nevertheless, the farouche quality of Kean is very apparent in this weirdly-lit colored print, perhaps showing the stage effect of the new gas footlights in theatres. In 1817 gas-lighting systems were installed in London's two legitimate houses: Drury Lane and Covent Garden. Courtesy of the Furness Collection, U. of Pennsylvania.
