Recreation of the Indoor Blackfriars Playhouse.
While Shakespeare is most associated with the Globe Theatre in Southwark, it is important to remember that his early plays were staged before 1598 at other playhouses such as the Theatre and the Rose. After 1608 this Blackfriars Theatre became an important alternative venue for the King's Men. This image shows a modern design for a possible indoor theatre such as the Blackfriars Playhouse in which Shakespeare could use effects developed by Inigo Jones (see Gallery 12, Sub-Album 4, Page 2).
