The Plagues of Egypt: a 15th Century Play from York.
Elizabethan drama grew directly out of such medieval biblical drama, which continued to be performed in Shakespeare's lifetime, at Coventry, within walking distance of Stratford-upon-Avon. The shared dependence on the use of costume rather than scenery or props for visual impact is marked in both phases of English theatre. Further illustrations of medieval drama appear in Gallery 9.1.A13-18.
