Max Reinhardt's A Midsummer Nights Dream

Max Reinhardt's A Midsummer Nights Dream, Act 1, Scene 2 with James Cagney

Reinhardt’s Dream of 1935 for Warner Bothers brilliant deploys cinematic talent to recreate a film version of the play, by using such stars as  James Cagney (Bottom), Micky Roonie (Puck), Olivia de Havilland (Hermia), and  by exploiting the glitter and sweep of Busby Berkeley’s musicals, matching the music of Mendelssohn. In other scenes it changes the scale of the play from a narrower stage focus to sweeping vistas. The original live performance was staged earlier at Berkeley, in the Faculty Glade and the Greek Theatre.
