RSC,As You Like It, 3.2(staged in NY)
This scene III.ii from “As You Like It” illustrates the inner driving force of the plot: to permit debate about the complexities and confusions of love. It shows the effects of disguises (e.g. originally, of the Elizabethan boy actor playing Princess Rosalind, finally pretending to be that girl, while also acting and dressing as if “she” is a boy!) Such disguises are an important factor in eliciting unexpected self-awareness in all the characters.
